What happens if you crash your campervan while you live in it full time?
It's not a nice thing to think about. But if the van is your home, your bedroom, your kitchen, your everything — you need to know the answer before you need it.
Be honest with your insurer — properly honest
My insurance company knows I live in my van full time. That's not something I hid or glossed over. I didn't just pick the cheapest online policy and hope for the best — because that approach can leave you completely unprotected when things go wrong.
Make sure you're actually covered for the worst case scenario. Ask the questions before you sign:
- Will they pay for your accommodation if the van is off the road?
- Can they provide a temporary campervan while yours is being repaired?
- Are your contents insured — solar panels, gas system, fridge, camera gear?
- Are you covered for breakdown in Europe?
Modifications can void your policy
This one catches people out. Even something as simple as changing the colour of your campervan can void your insurance if you haven't declared it. Any modifications to your build — roof raises, electrical systems, flooring, windows — need to be declared.
Read the fine print. Properly.
The bottom line
Be honest. Read everything. Make sure you're fully covered — not just for the drive, but for the life you're living inside it.
It's better to pay slightly more for the right policy than to lose everything because you skipped the small print.
